Pritchett Shadow Box

Pritchett family shadowbox

This shadow box depicts memorabilia of  Henry Carr Pritchett and Joseph Pritchett.

Henry Carr Pritchett came to the Sam Houston Normal Institute as a mathematics professor and became the fourth president of Sam Houston State (1891-1908). The Peabody Library was constructed under his leadership. The memorial stained glass with the school motto-“The measure of a life is its service” was commissioned by the class of 1908 to memorialize Henry Pritchett’s service to the school and community. The bronze medal depicted on the mural was stamped to honor Pritchett after his death.

Joseph Pritchett joined the faculty in 1888 and served the school for over 40 years. Representation of Pritchett family life is a portion of the mural shadow box, along with a replica pin from the Sam Houston Normal Institute. Pritchett owned much of the land west of campus. A portion of this land became Pritchett Field.

Portions of the Pritchett shadow box include an image of Old Main, First Methodist Church of Huntsville and a telescope they used for teaching and observation. “The measure of a life is its service” truly represents the Pritchett family’s service to our community and to the education of students at Sam Houston State.
