Tripod-  SHSU Unofficial Mascot

 

Tripod was a mixed breed mustard colored dog with a crippled left front leg who appeared on campus around 1948. He was quickly adopted by the students. Tripod loved campus activities whether it be a parade or a football game. Sam Houston State University students made sure he was fed, cared for and well loved. Tripod died on January 9, 1962 and was buried in front of Old Main. His funeral was a grand tribute to a loyal friend of SHSU. Hundreds of students attended the service complete with a band and three gun salute. On the Huntsville History mural, Tripod has a seat of honor where he can still be a part of Huntsville life.
